'Use of Java Technology to build Social Capital to achieve United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) or its' more country specific goals given in the MDG Community framework'
"Java technology", "Social Capital" these were words that were alien to me. As a volunteer social worker managing an NGO which works with women and children in rural areas of Sri Lanka, I was only familiar with conventional ways of networking and thereby improving living standards of impoverished people. The more I read about these topics the more I realized that 'the sky is the limit' if we can effectively use Java Technology to build Social Capital thereby achieving the country specific goals given in the MDG Community framework.
Social capital depends on w h o you know - the size, quality, and diversity of your personal and business networks - this is the conventional part - working/networking with people you know. But beyond that, social capital also depends on who you don't know, if you are indirectly connected to them via your networks - this is where Java technology comes in and then the opportunities are virtually limitless.
The inhumanity of poverty is becoming more known in the world day by day. Programmes are introduced daily in order to fight poverty. Giving charity to a person in need reduces her or his pain of poverty in the short run, but trains the same person to be more dependent upon that charity. Therefore we must identify the causes of poverty, and counteract those powerful negative forces. To overcome poverty the people should be gainfully employed or should be in a position to have a sustainable method of income generation.
I strongly feel that in achieving the goals given in the MDG Community framework one of the key areas to work in will be understanding poverty in Sri Lanka and ways of eliminating it by gainful employment or by creating a sustainable method of income generation. Social Capital, in conjunction with Java Technology can play a key role in achieving this by exchanging ideas/experiences/skills, programmes, technology.
Java world congress 2010 will be the start of a "new way of working" to make Sri Lanka and then the World a better place to live.
